New Music
Apart from the baroque, classical, and romantic repertoire, Contemporary Music is a special focal point in my work. It takes over a very central part and is a special joy in my life as an artist - in addition to our great traditional opera and concert repertoire.
The music of our own era comprises a nearly unlimited variety of styles, looking at Arnold Schönberg, Benjamin Britten, John Adams, Philip Glass, along with the modern music of my own generation.
Contemporary Music, more than the earlier styles, demands from the singer and provides him with an immense variety of vocal expression, and can even add a co-creative potential.
Already having worked with such great conductor-composers as Pierre Boulez and Peter Eötvös, I am grateful to have had the chance of being part of these thrilling moments of new creations. World premieres, those moments of the completely new, never heard before, rank among the greatest experiences, inspiring both interpreter and audiences alike.
Some of the most special moments in this regard have recently been:
Victor Ullmann:
Title Role / DER KAISER VON ATLANTIS, Bayerische Staatsoper München
Peter Eötvös:
ATLANTIS (by invitation of the composer), beim Lucerne Festival
Eric Hojsgaard:
Title Role / DON JUAN KOMMT AUS DEM KRIEG, World Premiere, Klangbogen Festival Vienna
Philip Glass:
SYMPHONY No V (in presence of the composer), Dennis Russell Davies, Gewandhaus Leipzig
Arnold Schönberg:
SERENADE op. 24, Pierre Boulez, Ensemble Intercontemporain Paris
John Adams:
Captian / THE DEATH OF KLINGHOFFER, Wuppertal Opera
Paul Hindemith:
REQUIEM, "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed", Dennis Russell Davies, Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg
